"The
remodeling of the Addison Apartments, at Woodward Avenue and Charlotte Street,
has created a new business district which is just one mile north of City Hall.
This seems to be the present "furthest north" of downtown retail district.
The remodeled Addison is a fashionable hotel of 400 rooms and has been a big factor
in itself in building up the section.
In the last row of floors which occupy the the ground floor frontage of the Addison
along Woodward Avenue are four firms which have already created an excellent reputation
for themselves. Grimshaw & Stevens , who have as handsome a haberdashery shop
as their is in the city, and also have a store at 12 W. Grand River Ave. next
comes Brown, cleaner and dyer, who has a downtown shop at 110 Farmer and a factory
at 259 Oakland Ave . North of these stores is the uptown office and receiving
station of the Colonial laundry,a high class establishment which has its laundry
at Congress and St. Antoine Streets. At the northern end of the row is Potts Drug
company this store being under the same management as the handsome drug store
now operated at Grand River and Myrtle Street.
Taken together, the four shops are an excellent addition to the business places
of the of central Woodward Avenue and are just the class to cater to the desirable
trade centering there." |
